Draft Chapter: The Triple Venom of “Poison”

1937: Octavia Mallard

Poison kills.

It kills the body first. Swift or slow. A drop in wine. A whiff of gas. The word itself bites crisp. Poisōn. From Latin pōtiō. Potion. Drink. What you sip becomes you. Or undoes you.

Etymology cuts clean. Old French poison meant brew. Alchemical mix. By 1200, it twisted. No longer mere draught. Now death’s draught. Chaucer’s pilgrims whisper it. “With poisoun y-maked.” Toxin refined. Greek toxikon. Bow-poison. Arrows tipped for hunters. Romans dipped spears. Parthians too. Venom on flint. Wound festers. Flesh blackens.

Physical poison acts sure. Arsenic mimics cholera. Grips gut. Twists bowels. Vomiting. Flux. Heart stutters. Collapse. Belladonna dilates eyes. Pretty pupils. Then paralysis. Opium dulls breath. Lungs forget. Cyanide starves blood. Cells choke. No mercy in chemistry. Each atom precise. Mendeleev’s table lists them. Merciless clerks.

But poison creeps mental. Words poison. Ideas fester. Propaganda drips. Slow venom in the mind. Hitler calls it giftgas. Gift? Gas? Euphemism cloaks. Minds swallow. Rage ferments. Dostoevsky knew. “Poison of the soul.” Raskolnikov drinks doubt. Guilt gnaws. Insanity blooms. Freud dissects it. Neurosis as toxin. Repressed urge. Turns inward. Madness.

Mentally, it warps thought. Gossip poisons trust. Lies breed suspicion. Lovers part. Friends fracture. Nations splinter. Marx saw class hate as slow poison. Bourgeois whispers erode worker will. Lenin weaponised it. Bolshevik ink. Printed tracts. Minds poisoned for revolution. Sydney whispers now. Harbour views hide resentments. Wives murmur. Husbands brood. Envy festers.

Spiritually, poison corrupts deep. Soul’s draught. Sin’s brew. Bible warns. “Cup of devils.” Revelation 18. Babylon’s wine. Drunkards fall. Augustine traced it. Original sin. Inherited toxin. Adam’s bite. Humanity tainted. Dante descends. Treachery’s ice. Poison of betrayal. Judas sip.

Etymons burrow older. Proto-Indo-European pō(i)-. To drink. Same root as potion. Potable turned peril. Sanskrit pūya. Pus. Corruption’s fluid. Flows from wound. Taints all. Norse sagas echo. Eitr. Venom of worlds. Ragnarok’s frost.

Triple strike. Body crumples. Mind unravels. Spirit withers. Poison unites them. One word. Three fangs.

I misread smirks. Students giggle. Think me quaint. Etymologist fussing roots. They sip modern poisons. Radio static. Newsreels lie. Cinema dreams. Souls erode.

Word bites still. Poison. Crisp. Crisp as fang. Drink deep. Or spit.
