States of Grace

Publisher’s introduction

As Senior Editor responsible for bringing this venerable work to a contemporary audience, it is my duty to provide clarity around the supplementary materials collectively termed the “Miscellanea.” These elements, while no doubt intended by the original editor to enrich and expand the main text, demand our careful scrutiny for both their strengths and their shortcomings.

The original editor’s diligence in citing sources is evident, though at times the commentary wanders into unnecessary erudition, which may challenge the uninitiated reader. Nevertheless, these notes provide necessary context for the more academically minded and are a notable attempt—albeit imperfect—to ground the social observations in documented history.

Primary Documents Transcriptions:

Here the reader gains direct access to key historical manuscripts and letters. While some selections seem arbitrary, reflecting the original editor’s particular fascinations, they nonetheless serve as invaluable portals to the past, offering raw material for independent judgement on the linguistic and class phenomena described.

Bibliography:

The exhaustive bibliography reflects a commendable breadth of research. One might question the editor’s inclusion of certain obscure works, yet the compilation remains a vital resource for scholars eager to pursue deeper exploration.

Errata and Emendations:

It is reassuring to find a candid errata list openly acknowledging minor flaws. This transparency is to be praised, though it perhaps raises questions about the rigour of earlier proofreading stages. Readers should appreciate this commitment to accuracy, albeit belated.

Index:

Finally, the index is a critical and thoughtfully constructed tool for navigating the dense material. Its presence ensures the work’s continued usability and relevance in modern academic contexts.

In sum, while the Miscellanea reflects the sometimes overzealous inclinations of its original compiler, it nevertheless preserves essential apparatus that supports the primary narrative and equips this edition for both scholarly inquiry and a broader readership. It is with cautious endorsement that I present these materials to the public, confident they contribute to the work’s enduring value.
