States of Grace

MALLARD, Duke of (Great Britain, 1750).

Marquis deCanard (France, 1620, extinct 1789).

Edward August FITZARTUR, 47th Duke of Mallard, b. 1930; succeeded his father, Edward, 46th Duke, in 1990.

The title of Marquis de Canard was conferred upon the 21st Duke by Letters Patent of Louis XV in 1620, in consideration of long friendship between the Crowns. This dignity was suppressed at the Revolution of 1789 and is not now recognised by the French authorities, though its continued usage in England has been sanctioned by family custom.

Seat: Mallard House, Anetis, co. ——

Estates: upwards of 300,000 acres in the Counties of —— and ——.

Motto: Agnus Castus et Apocynum (“Coldness and Deceit”).

Crest: A sword proper piercing a lettuce vert, between three ducal crowns or.

Supporters: Dexter, a mallard proper; sinister, a goose regardant argent, each gorged with a coronet and chained or.

Artful comment:

“The Canard title died in France but lives in England, like all good lies. A defunct marquisate is no less useful for opening doors than a living one.”
